Day 156

February 6, 2010

I am the biggest procrastinator today! I don't have to be to work until five, so I just kind of loaf around this morning. The wind is howling outside my glass sliding door, making it seem like it's traitorous outside! I wait until the very last minute to leave because I hate the thought of walking in such cold weather! When I get to work, the heat isn't really working. My nose is frozen, I can't feel my fingers, and the hair on my arm is standing straight up! So, me and the other hostess take turns going back into the kitchen to warm up!

Work definitely proves to be interesting. I tell ya' what. Nothing exciting happens in your life, until you least expect it! I expected tonight to be boring, for fear I wouldn't have anything to write about. But oh no! You can thank "The Desperate Housewives of New Jersey" wannabe's for this! A group of 17 comes in for a gentlemen's 45th birthday. Let's just say, they were having a really good time, before they came in! The women walk in, where the only real thing on them, may have been their Tiffany's.

(P.S. This is the engagement ring I like. Of course girls look at this stuff! It's fun! Check it out! Don't freak out over the price! In my opinion, this is a gift that lasts forever! It's a great investment! Because with me, honey, it is forever! You're stuck with me! ;) I would be okay with it not being from Tiffany's. I actually prefer it to NOT be from there. Too cliche! If I pop open a Harry Winston box, forget about it! I'm ALL yours! ;) )

Anyways...

Our manager tells them we cannot serve them any alcohol. The reataurant is liable for them when they leave. Smart move on her part. They get mad! Oh man, do they get mad! I stand up front, so I have no idea what's going on. The birthday boy starts walking out and I say, "Hey, are you coming back?" I'm completely kidding with him because I really thought he was going outside to smoke or something! He mumbles something and walks out.  His wife follows a bit later, crying! I figured they got in a fight.

Then, the other people slowly start floating up front. I get really nervous because they are complaining something fierce. I don't want them to say anything to me! What am I going to say? So, I just stand there, staring at the computer, hoping they will hurry and go away!

Okay, I'm sorry, but when you show up, three sheets to the wind, do you really expect us to serve you more alcohol? Not only are you literally yelling in our dining room, but you are being rude to everyone.

So, there is one lady left. Ms. Cheetah print, fur coat says to me in her cocky attitude, "Can you explain to me what just happened?"
Me: "Well,  I don't know."
Cheetah: "Well, your witch of a hostess just kicked us out. She said she couldn't serve us because we're drunk. We're not drunk. And I'm a big wig at New York Magazine."
Me: "Well, ma'am, I do know that one guest couldn't even walk by himself when he came into the restaurant. He had to be held up by two of his friends."
Cheetah: "What if he has an illness? She just discriminated against him."
Me: "Does he have an illness?"
Cheetah: "Yea"
Me: "Really? Because when he left, he was walking just fine by himself. He didn't need the help of his buddies, so I don't think that's the issue." You're really going to pull the discrimination card? Please.

On the upside, the Super Bowl is tomorrow! I was stumped on what to bring to the pot luck, so I asked the chef! He puts together a bunch of herbs and spices for me and tells me to just add sour cream! He's so sweet! It's going to be so good! Who are you rooting for? I'm going for the Saints, all the way! I'm actually more excited for the commercials. Bud and Bud Light always have the best commercials! Hopefully they hold up to their reputation this year! Three million for an advertisement--you'd hope they would!

Note to self: Randomly read your horoscope. Even though, most people think they're more of a coincidental type of thing, it's still fun! My grandma reads mine to me today because it's all too perfect!
"Some people have a hard time letting the wind carry them where it will. That's not your challenge. It's way harder for you to stay in one place for any duration. You're in luck. You'll be asked (and maybe paid) to wander."

Crazy! All I can think of is...drum roll, please...Florida!?!?!?! Maybe? Is a job offer coming my way? Ooohhh...I don't know, but hopefully this is true because I can't wait to find out!!! ;)

Also, go to a psychic once in your life! It's so much fun! I've been to two! It's so funny how you take what they say and twist it into your own reality! I do believe some things they say are true. Both said I will be wealthy someday. Gotta love that! One said I'm going to write a book! Awesome! Both said I'll only be married once, with two children--one boy and one girl! Perfect! Just what I want! They both said other things, but it's weird how both psychics told me things most wouldn't assume about me.

Psychic one told me I need to drink green tea because it will help me with a health issue I have. Weird! Who knows about that?? This is the same psychic who told my friend that she is a twin and that someday, she'll have twins! Crazy!

Psychic two told me and I quote, "You cry too much over..." She's talking about a certain situation. No way do you know this! No one would EVER guess that! It's nuts! She also said other things that ended up being true. She is one insightful lady!!! I want to go back and talk to her now!!! ;)

I was looking online for things to do for my friend's bachelorette party and apparently, there is a lady in NYC that's a psychic, who does readings for bachelorette parties! Why on earth would you want to go to one of these ladies pre-wedding? No way! I would be petrified she would tell me something awful--like my fiance likes men, or my bridesmaid is going to run away with him, or something crazy like this! ;) I don't recommend it.

Have fun with your Super Bowl festivities! Whatever they may be! GO SAINTS!!! ;)

Day 150

 January 31, 2010

Well, today is a typical Sunday. Didn't really do much today, then went to work tonight. It's slow, as usual, since it's Sunday, so nothing too exciting happened. I'm exhausted from the week and the weekend, so I don't really feel like blogging. Nothing overly exciting happened to me today, for me to feel the need to urgently tell you about it.

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! Happy Monday! And Happy February! ;) Crazy, I know!

Note to self: Stop complaining about all of the little things that "go wrong" in your life. It could be so much worse! Suck it up, read the story below, and just be thankful you are healthy.

This dog was born on Christmas Eve in 2002. He was born with two legs. He, of course, could not walk when he was born. Even his mother didn't want him. His first owner also did not think he could survive and was thinking of putting him to sleep. But then, his present owner, Jude Stringfellow, met him and wanted to take care of him. She became determined to teach and train this little dog to walk by himself. She named him, Faith.

In the beginning, she put Faith on a surfboard to let him feel the movement. Later, she used peanut butter on a spoon as a lure and reward him for standing up and jumping around. Even the other dog at home encouraged him to walk. Amazingly, only after six months, like a miracle, Faith learned to balance on his hind legs, and to jump to move forward. After further training, in the snow, he could now walk like a human being.

Faith now loves to walk around. No matter where he goes, people are attracted to him. He is quickly becoming famous on the international scene and has appeared in various newspapers and on television shows. There is now a book entitled, "With a Little Faith," being published about him. He was even considered to appear in one of the Harry Potter movies.

Jude has given up her teaching post and plans to take him around the world to preach, that even without a perfect body, one can have a perfect soul.

In life, there are always undesirable things. So, in order to feel better, you just need to look at life from another direction. I hope this message will bring fresh new ways of thinking to everyone and that everyone will appreciate and be thankful for each beautiful day. Faith is the continual demonstration of the strength and wonder of life.

Hope you enjoyed it! My friend, Jennifer, sent it to me in an e-mail! It's a tear-jerker! ;)

Day 146

January 27, 2010

Ohhhh today. What a day. Here is my pattern: home to work all day-run home to get clothes-go to west village for a meeting-back uptown to work until close-then back home. Nuts! My menu for the day: a Grande bold coffee for breakfast, cupcake for lunch, a half a cookie for dinner. I'm so tired, I don't even feel like eating. However, this morning I'm thinking. You know those stir sticks at Starbucks? How germy do you think those things are? Think of how many people put their hands on them a day! Tons! And you have no idea where those hands have been! Then you take one and stir your cream and sugar with it. So gross! I decide, I am no longer going to use these convenient wooden stir utensils.

So, my Gmail has been way off lately. My grandma sent me an e-mail Monday morning, and I got it today. The e-mail said it was sent "22 hours" ago. So, if you sent me an e-mail and got no response, more than likely, I didn't get it! First the phone, now the e-mail! My lines of communication are slowly taking a turn for the worse! ;)

We all love summer and look forward to it when October hits! Well, this year, we can also look forward to the clothes and accessories! The styles for summer and so fun! Flowy, flirty, light, and airy! The colors could be a bit brighter, but I only see a certain selection, so maybe there are more brights out there! In the next couple of days, BHG is going to be getting in so many new things, I can't wait to see it all! And I organize it all and make account for it when it comes in, so I love to check everything out! The jewelry is awesome! Funky rings, big bracelets, chunky necklaces! So awesome! I play dress up! ;)

I have a plan of getting into bed by ten o'clock tonight. My hopes are quickly shot down at 10:30 this morning when my co-worker calls me and asks me to fill in for her. She is really sick--poor thing. Having the flu is no fun!!! I don't mind filling in. It's extra money!! Whew! So, I have to leave my internship early so I can go home and get black clothes--and I'm in a hurry! So, of course, I power walk home. But you know how it is--I power walk the whole avenue, then have to stop. The light changes. Then I take off and power walk. Then have to hault. The light turns red. This happens for eight avenues! That equals out to 1.5 miles! Can you believe I walk at LEAST three miles everyday?? It's good exercise, I suppose.

So, I'm still in a hurry and head to the train station. I swear, I walk through the subway for what feels like twenty minutes to find my dang train! I'm getting really nervous because I don't want to be late! I hate being late! It's my biggest pet peeve! Unless you have a really good reason for being late, there's no excuse for it. It's so irritating. If I'm late, you know there's a good reason! Anyways, the subway is interesting tonight. I see a drag queen, a really good band, some pretty B.A. break dancers! Once off my 14th Street exit, I'm even more flustered because I can't find my way out. I pass the exit because I'm distracted by a homeless, drunk man who is making art with his motorized scooter on pieces of white, computer paper. His heads down, flopping from side to side, as he puts the scooter in drive. Then reverse. Then drive. Then reverse. Haha! The art is very...interesting...to say the least.

I get to the west village and instantly fall in love. It's totally my scene-- it's clean, it's trendy, it's neighborhood-y! It's fantastic! If I get a job here, this is where I'm moving!!! The streets are cobblestone and the restaurants remind you of your favorite restaurant on the corner in your home town. Places where everyone knows everyone. In the city, neighborhoods like these are great to be a part of! The meeting went well!

When I first get to work, it's a bit chaotic. Then it slows way down. I'm standing at the host stand, when all of a sudden I smell fire. Again...me with fire. My space heater isn't what smells. It's not Beba in the coat room. My manager comes up and I say, "Do you smell something?" My manager's response, "Um, yeah, the lady on 23 lit her hair on fire!" Hahahahaha! Oh my God, that's hysterical!!! Her and her man were leaning over the table, smoochin' on each other, and poof! Up in flames!

I can tell you right now, I'm going to need some serious coffee tomorrow! I'm going to stock up all day! It's going to be a long one! I have my internship, then the restaurant, then out to dinner for restaurant week! Whew hew! We're trying Scandinavian food. Never had it, so I'm pretty excited! Then back on Friday morning at the internship. I'm only 25, but feel like I'm 60 right now! This is no good, people!

Note to self: "Never save something for a special occasion. Everyday in your life is a special occasion!" When your co-worker tells you about how her relative was killed in 9/11 and left behind his wife, new born baby, and two other kids, it makes you appreciate your family. When you find out your neighbor from back home has been diagnosed with leukemia, it makes you thankful you and your loved ones are healthy! When you find out an old friend's brother is diagnosed with the same kind of cancer, it makes you want to call the ones you love and tell them what they mean to you. When another kid from your high school commits suicide, you wonder what was going on in their mind.

Tragedies happen everyday and you don't want to look back and say, "Only if I would have told them this." or "I wish I would have told them this." or "If they only knew how I really felt." Always express how you feel because when it's too late. It's too late. Put yourself out there. Tell the people you love in your life how you really feel. What if you never get the chance to do so? What if tomorrow is too late? You never know. Then you'll be mad at yourself. Why do you want regrets?

Never go to bed mad at someone. Never leave the house mad at someone. Never hang up the phone in a fight. Life is too short. Time is too precious. My goal for you for the day: call someone today and tell them how much they mean to you. Even to just say, "Hey, hope your day's great! I love you." Just randomly. That's the best kind of phone call! Trust me, the person on the other end of the phone will appreciate it! Heck! Call three people! Just appreciate the people who love you and are a big part of your life and who you are!

Day 138

January 19, 2010

Well...my phone is broke! Crap. I have one of those touch screen phones. I'm not big into the latest cell phones, but it looks cool, so I got it. Too bad the "touch" part of the whole idea isn't working. It won't let me touch the buttons to get into text messages, missed calls, nothing. So, I get the pleasure of going to AT&T tomorrow to get a new phone. Wish me luck. I hate that place!

So, the last few days, I haven't been sleeping at all! I am exhausted! I don't know what's wrong, but I hurt so bad from my hips to me knees, that it's painful to stand, sit, sleep, etc. I need to go to the doctor. I've never had this happen before, so I'm a little nervous as to what's going on. I've tried taking Advil and other medicines, but they don't work. I haven't been doing anything out of the ordinary either, so who knows! I also woke up this morning, ate some toast, then randomly got sick. It's weird. I never throw up. I think the last time I may have thrown up, (not due to self consumption of certain liquids) was in elementary school.

As most of you know, at the restaurant, they serve us a free meal everyday. I leave my internship early everyday to enjoy the yummy food the chefs prepare for us. All I have to eat today is a yogurt. I typically save up my appetite for dinner! I get there and guess what? NO food! And they had mashed potatoes, turkey, honey glazed ham, and salad! So delicious! I go up to the chef, later in the night, and say, "Chef Greg, I'm so bummed I missed family meal! I heard it was amazing!" He just chuckles at me.

Sundays is typically the best day for family meals. So, it's great that the chef and I work together, along with Kara! It's a great day in paradise! So, I ask him tonight if he can make chicken pot pie on Sunday for family meal. I have this wild craving for it! He says, "I'll see what I can do," in the typical macho voice and attitude men have when they say that. Ha!

The night goes on, then all of a sudden I hear, "Psst. Ashley." I turn around and Chef Greg is holding this fantastic looking bowl, heaping with flaky crust. "What is this?!" I ask him all excited. He says, "Well, you said you haven't eaten today, and chicken pot pie sounded good, so I made some for you." Oh my goodness! He's so sweet! He made it from scratch! He's never made it before, so he just threw stuff together! It was the best thrown together meal I've ever tasted! It's a pretty amazing pot pie! Like I told my friend, the fact that he thought about making it for me, then surprised me with it, made it that much more delicious! No man has ever done that for me! It's so nice!

At work tonight, a gentlemen, who I've seen before, walks up the host stand. I swear to God it's Morgan Freeman! I get so nervous because he starts talking and joking with me! As he goes to get his coat from coat check, I go up to Gabe, our bartender and ask him, "Hey, is that Morgan Freeman?" Now, the bar is somewhat full of people. Gabe yells, "Hey Ruben! Ashley wants to know if you're Morgan Freeman! Hahaha!" Everyone starts staring. Thanks Gabe. Ruben responds, "You should have told her yes and that I'm single!" I cannot tell you how much he looks like Morgan Freeman. Honest to God, it's his long lost twin! It's crazy!

Since I'm falling asleep at my computer, I think it's time to go to bed. Running on four hours of sleep a night is not good for my body! I require at least seven hours of sleep. And I don't know what I'm going to do for an alarm! I rely on phone's alarm to wake me up in the morning! Oh no! This is awful! So, I'm pretty sure I won't get much sleep because I'll be constantly waking up to be sure I don't oversleep. Dang AT&T!

Note to self: "Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are." -Kurt Cobain
It's the quote of the day that runs on a ticker in my email! It's so great! Why would you want to be someone else? Just because their life seems so perfect? You don't know what happens when they go home at night, or once the front door closes. That persons life could be a living hell--they just do a good job of hiding it. Love who you are! You are here for a reason and a purpose. Embrace what you have, who you are, and what you're about. That's why people love you! Don't change who you are for a certain situation or person. It's YOU people want to be around. Not the fake person you pretend to be. People see right through phoniness, so there's no point in pretending. Stay true to yourself, for that is one of the best qualities anyone can have.

Day 10

September 16, 2009

My new place does not have Internet yet, so another late blog. But it's worth the wait! Today is move in day! The apartment looks great! Pictures to come later.

Brick roads are charming, but not when you are hauling 70 pounds of luggage behind you. They tend to topple your things over in the middle of the street. Mom and dad sent three boxes that included a blow-up mattress, Dora the Explorer dinnerware, and plastic utensils and cups--not to mention plastic shot glasses! Mom must know I plan on celebrating!

I ask my dad to just pick one of three boxes of clothes and send them. It's getting cold here, so I need some warmer garments. When I open the box, guess what I get? The one box that is full of SUMMER clothes. Damn! Now what am I going to do? I suppose 30 layers of tanks and tees will keep me warm in this 60-degree weather, right?

With no Internet, what am I to do? Um, duh--turn up iTunes and dance the afternoon away while unpacking. So, I'm getting ready to shower and as I am completely naked in the middle of my room, I realize, Ashley, you don't have curtains yet, and your neighbors are right there, where they could possibly see you. Awesome. You bet I make a beeline to the bathroom.

I finally find a place that serves home-style cooking, right down the street. Southern fried chicken fingers and Mac-and-cheese--you can't beat it. While waiting to check out, I hear, "Is there actual pieces of pineapple in here, because if not, I don't know who would eat it...Who would eat fruitcake anyway?" A female worker: "Why don't you go fruitcake yourself somewhere else?" A male worker: "Can you say, get a life?" The best part--he was a short, fat, balding guy in his thirties...named Brett! Spelled with two T's! Ha!

I started Planet Hollywood last night. So much fun! My co-workers are awesome and being able to talk to people from around the world is so interesting. I met people from Brazil, Australia, France, Holland, London, Israel, and so on. My favorite--the French men. Two are very attractive. They walk by me once and stop to talk--they come back around and say they have to walk by me one more time. Walk by all you want--I'm enjoying the view as much as you say you are! ;)

You get to see a lot working in Times Square. The homeless man posted up outside all night just staring into the store--like he is thinking of how to hold the place hostage; a models photo shoot in the middle of the street; and a random, older guy having a dance party with himself and our glass door--stripper style. If you can only imagine. Yeuck! The consensus with my co-workers: "I'm going to go finish being bitter, while this poor excuse for a model is making $250,000 and I'm making minimum wage." =)

By the end of the night, my feet are killing me. I am so ready for bed. Getting back and being in silence was wonderful. So relaxing. Time for bed, another long day awaits.

Note to self: Learn how to say NO! Don't be afraid to hurt people's feelings, because really, who is getting the shitty end of the deal? You are--you don't want to follow through with your commitment anyway. Say NO to the co-worker who swoops his Donald Trump hair from his face, telling you about his weight problem, and then proceeds to ask you to a movie--only to follow with a text message at 2 a.m. reminding you to save his number in your phone. What a hot date this will turn out to be. And say NO to the curly-haired French tourist (different from the cute ones), whom by the way, may or may not be balding on one side of his head, when he asks for your e-mail address. "The next time you come to France, you look me up?" Yeah, maybe in twenty years when it's a feasible time to go. Yeah, don't think so. Be thankful to those who look out for you and come and "save" you from these creepers. And always make a code word or gesture, so they know when to get you out of yet another funk you have managed to get yourself into.
