Day 9

September 15, 2009

I cannot wait until I move into my apartment tomorrow--I am ready for a home-cooked meal. Although NYC has great food and oh-so many restaurants, all I want is a steak, mashed potatoes, and corn--Iowa homestyle. Today, I am recapping my roots--starting with music.

How many people in NYC do you think listen to country music on the walk to work? Ha--maybe two, and one is me! I want to bust out those country dance moves I've learned over the years as my iPod plays "Papa Loves Mama" and "These Are My People." I bet if I do, people will throw money at me thinking, Look at that poor girl listening to that hillbilly music. She must need help. Because apparently, since I'm from Iowa, everyone thinks I grew up in the middle of a cornfield with no TV or electricity. Bringing me to my next point. Looks.

Since I've been here, I have been trying to blend in with the "New Yorkers" as best as I can. It's not working. Whenever I first meet someone I get, "You're not from here are you?" I politely respond, "No, I'm from Iowa." "I can tell," they say, "but it's not a bad thing." All I say back is, "Well then, I'm going to take that as a compliment." I guess we have a wholesome look to us, ladies. My plan is to use it to my advantage! ;)

Simply walking in NYC brings on incidents' in itself. I get pelted with a box this morning when a delivery guy throws it out of the back of his truck without looking. Yes, he apologizes. The talent agent from the show, "Candy Girls" accidentally bumps into me. And a man comes up and puts his hand on my arm, shakes his head and says, "Hmm...no." Cueing me to stop twirling my headphones in my hand so I don't hit him. Umm...there is plenty of sidewalk here for all of us, sir--go around me! Didn't your mama teach you to keep your hands to yourself? I don't know where those nasty things have been! Checklist item one: Anti-bacterial hand gel.

I think Pinkberry is my new guilty pleasure, minus the guilty. It's only 150 calories for a small! I had another one today...I can justify though because it's going to be getting colder, so my craving will start decreasing. Good news--they deliver!

It's time to relax because tomorrow is big! Although I only have a few things, my parents are FedExing some boxes. I need to get there early! Plus, I start my job at Planet Hollywood tomorrow! Good night!

Note to self: Always listen to your grandparents. They are not only wise, but always end up being right. When they tell you that one day, you will just wake up, and your worries and stressors about certain things will be gone, they are absolutely correct. It's so freeing to know the once-upon-a-time drama you continue to create in your head is gone. Even when you have those bad days, do not re-hash those memories/thoughts. They are toxic and not worth your time. Just turn on some music and dance! It's the best way to forget about everything and be yourself!
